You'd expect metal from a Neurosis project but this is actually mostly electronic. The sounds and melodies are densely layered and hypnotic, with distant howls and cries mixed in with dark squalls of atmospheric noise and rumbling resonance. Highly recommended of course to any fans of Swans nineties material and Neurosis, but also to fans of the likes of Portishead and generally anyone who wants to experience a unique voice working against a perfectly matched sonic-backdrop.

What You Will would be it. These three Asheville, N.C.-based musicians — who play likeable, stripped-down, pretentious-free, compressed and complex polyrhythmic music that has been defined as math-rock, avant-punk and avant-progressive — aligned themselves with the fight against imposed artistic and political forms by taking their unusual band name from a Charles Mingus song called "Ah-Leu-Cha" and the "istas" part of "Zapatistas" (an indigenous revolutionary movement in Chiapas, Mexico).

PURCHASEI love mathcore. Perhaps this is not the best way to describe them (I could use metalcore, chaotic hardcore, and on) but mathcore is one of the only musical genres in which, whenever I hear any song of it, there's almost always a part in the song that makes me go "fuck, this is awesome." And these guys makes me feel the same way. Ergo, I'll probably post more of their stuff.
Also, yeah, they're christians? Who gives a shit? Good music > beliefs, looks, et cetera. Ah, tags are fucked up. Last.fm has both of these names and some other (and bigger) ones. I'm keeping the long ones, though, they're nicer. :3

I've been favoring Australian bands lately. First it was The Red Sun Band, and now it's this gem, Magic Dirt. I've always been a grunge fan somewhat, but always longed for something that actually sounded like the genre, not just generic alternative crap. I have a real find here! It's grunge, and it doesn't sound terrible, a double-bonus for me, and a triple-bonus if you listen to it, for it's a really great album. Uncluttered arrangements and gutsy, unprocessed sounds define this band, who put up a true effort to make music no matter what. 'Emerald Green' is an incredible song, make sure to listen to it.

Evangelista IIDOWNLOADPURCHASECarla Bozulich made this record during a cold gray season in Montreal, but the desolation of northern wintertime is nothing compared to the sonic devastation she wreaks on the very first track. “Evangelista I” rolls in like a toxic fog; bells toll, strings groan, phones ring, an engine refuses to start, and then her voice comes in like a last prayer before the ship goes down. When the music stops for a moment, her unaccompanied delivery reminds me of Beefheart’s “Orange Claw Hammer,” but there’s none of that tune’s hallucinatory humor, only palpable anguish. Then the music lurches back into gear, all sampled scrapes and backwards tone-drizzle, and a fire and brimstone preacher bubbles up through the mix. Yup, we’re in Godspeed! You Black Emperor territory, which makes sense since several of that over-the-top orchestra’s members contribute here. Godspeed wore that trick out after their second album, but somehow Bozulich makes it work one more time.

Despite its technical prowess, some of the movements tend to drag on in spots, leaving portions of the album sounding unfocused. Maeda occasionally manages to anchor everything with his propulsive beats, but the surge of strings and keyboards is in constant lift, leaving some unresolved tension between the elements. Despite the often confounding juxtapositions here, Hurtbreak Wonderland is a beautiful and original record that clearly breaks new ground in the post-rock genre. The cornucopia of instruments and noises used here leaves plenty of room for continued exploration. In short, WEG has created a deep and dreamy effort that begs for multiple listens.

Well, this was one of the only albums to come out, there were others which you can find for free now, such as
