Scrawl - Velvet Hammer (1993) Saturday, May 18, 2013 |

You've never heard of this album. By that, I mean that no one knows this album. For some reason or another Scrawl never showed up on the map in any major way, but despite this, it's one of the best albums I've heard. Scrawl, sounding like a fusion of earlier Sonic Youth and Pavement, while taking their music in a very personal direction. The album's lyricism remains realistic and never looks to the grandiose, while at the same time remaining strangely poignant. It's emotional, it's lo-fi, and it's good.

Slowride - C/S (2006) Wednesday, May 25, 2011 |

Slowride's C/S is similar to True Widow, in that they both employ a copious amount of downtempo tunes to good effect. However, in addition to being slowcore, Slowride also employs elements from emo and indie music. (Old school emo, not whiny kids who like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas') It's loud but not forward, a dull and melancholy rock album that bleeds instead of pounds. This is a must-have for any slowcore fan, and a damn fine album in general.

Yellow Ostrich - The Mistress (2010) Friday, January 28, 2011 |

Imagine if Neutral Milk Hotel had a younger brother who was really into pop. This is that younger brother. Lo-fi, yet unabashedly pleased to be there; this album shines in being not only fun, but being thoughtfully so. The Mistress opens with a really cool harmony over sparse, yet fitting, guitar, loping in and out of tonality as it seemingly wakes up, still ready to go back to sleep. But it doesn't. WHALE, the standout track on this album, starts with some drum pounding and harmonics, the singing of lyrics playing second fiddle. In the background: a whale? muffled screaming? But suddenly we're on the ocean. Some really rad percussion ensues, and the album keeps building until the throbbing riffs in track four begin, and carry through most of the album. Strangest use of vocals? Track five. It's just weird to hear, but pleasant at the same time; imagine being haunted by an acapella quartet of ghosts. The album ends on a shoegaze-y note, dreamy vocals to coast on out. All in all, a good album worth hearing.

There are lots of things I could say about this album, but just listening to it would make more sense than how I would explain this, by far.... it's a good album, know that.

The M's - Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out (2008) |

A good single from The M's on 7" vinyl. When I was listening to this, I thought two things to myself: "Damn, this is a really cool single", and "Damn, these guys sure love their distortion.

Double bonus: Polyvinyl has a ridiculous sale going on (albums for 4-7$, posters for 0.25-.50$), and I got this nice single for a charming 0.30$. You guys should check the sale out as well, it's aces.

Codeine - The White Birch (1994) Sunday, October 31, 2010 |

This was one of, if not the album, that created the slowcore genre, not to mention being some of the first proto-post rock. If you're now curious as to how this sounds, simply examine the album cover. It feels like taking a walk through a park in winter, where the air is dead, and the longer you walk the less sure you are that the park is completely real. The whole experience becomes a surreal episode, something for your memory to analyze, twist, and distort, attempting to rationalize it. It begins to snow, and you're walking through this park, into the white.

Hands down this is the best cover album of Nirvana songs ever made. Yes, I know that sounds way too confident, but upon hearing the album, you'll be more than inclined to agree. Disclaimer: This review is not a guarantee that you will love this album, it's just a guarantee it is the best Nirvana cover out there right now.

GODAMN THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING.

So, there was this great share thread at /mu/ (I think it was archived, if I get the link I'll post here) and one of the posts was a link to this album and a >jazz post-rock. I was like "wut, do want."

It was not really what I was expecting. Shit's pretty cool and calm, most songs are just guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Sounds a lot like dad rock (even though the guitars are most of time without distortion) and, I dunno, stuff like Fallen Angel from King Crimson, with less prog.

My fav songs are Sever, One Less Blues and This Day Next Year. Sever is dad rock at its best, imho, shit's so cash. One Less Blues has an epic distorted solo at its end. And This Day Next Year is pure post-rock, the melody repeats and repeats and repeats and it's beautiful.

in b4 dad rock is not a genre
