Hands down this is the best cover album of Nirvana songs ever made. Yes, I know that sounds way too confident, but upon hearing the album, you'll be more than inclined to agree. I just downloaded this, and I'm impressed. This is the first SDRE 7", without Jeremy Enigk in the band. Dan Hoerner is singing, and his voice is an Eddie Vedder-esque roar. The music sounds more like noise rock than emo-pop, too. Download it.

Magic Dirt are a band from Geelong, an industrial city near Melbourne, Australia that should have been levelled and redesigned as a toxic waste dump several years ago. Nothing ever goes the way of Geelong residents; their major bank collapsed in '91, the once booming car industry has found cheaper labour in Indonesia, and their beloved Geelong Cats football team are perennially second place in the AFL. Magic Dirt, arising from an incestuous but sometimes brilliant local band scene (their influence relies more on deceased nobodies like 'Bored' and the 'Seaweed Gorillas' than on Sonic Youth and Hole) reflected this desparation. Honest and powerful, Young and Full of the Devil is an album not to be overlooked.

I've been favoring Australian bands lately. First it was The Red Sun Band, and now it's this gem, Magic Dirt. I've always been a grunge fan somewhat, but always longed for something that actually sounded like the genre, not just generic alternative crap. I have a real find here! It's grunge, and it doesn't sound terrible, a double-bonus for me, and a triple-bonus if you listen to it, for it's a really great album. Uncluttered arrangements and gutsy, unprocessed sounds define this band, who put up a true effort to make music no matter what. 'Emerald Green' is an incredible song, make sure to listen to it.
