Steve Albini is a pretty cool dude, his bands are always neat. Though I originally got this because I liked the spacey album cover (I really am a sucker for those) and was pretty surprised that I really enjoyed it. So figured I might as well share this.

I never find good albums like this, so when I do, I like to share them. Very mind bending rhythmic noise, it's a bit harsh and kinda dark, sort of haunting yet it is a very interesting blend of music which really creates a really amazing album.

Hailing from Lithuania, Surdr and Seagull Overseas are both one-man projects making some of the best dark ambient I've been exposed to. Surdr's side deals with a concept of meditation without cultural influence, so as to have closer contact with one's soul without derailment from outside forces. The notable track "37," which seems to defy from the rest in genre without straying away from the central theme, while Seagull Overseas' "Night of Past," stands out, and pleasantly so, as the only track with vocals as well as the application of guitar for more than droney sounds. The sides each, for the most part, share a common feel throughout, Surdr's being that of a wave, where as the other is more droning and constant Surdr and Seagull Overseas each have myspaces which can be found at [1] and [2], respectively. In addition, Seagull Overseas' website can be found at [3]. All material released by these artists can be downloaded for no charge from their respective sites.

If ever an instrumental album were laced with political commentary, What You Will would be it. These three Asheville, N.C.-based musicians — who play likeable, stripped-down, pretentious-free, compressed and complex polyrhythmic music that has been defined as math-rock, avant-punk and avant-progressive — aligned themselves with the fight against imposed artistic and political forms by taking their unusual band name from a Charles Mingus song called "Ah-Leu-Cha" and the "istas" part of "Zapatistas" (an indigenous revolutionary movement in Chiapas, Mexico).

Carla Bozulich made this record during a cold gray season in Montreal, but the desolation of northern wintertime is nothing compared to the sonic devastation she wreaks on the very first track. “Evangelista I” rolls in like a toxic fog; bells toll, strings groan, phones ring, an engine refuses to start, and then her voice comes in like a last prayer before the ship goes down. When the music stops for a moment, her unaccompanied delivery reminds me of Beefheart’s “Orange Claw Hammer,” but there’s none of that tune’s hallucinatory humor, only palpable anguish. Then the music lurches back into gear, all sampled scrapes and backwards tone-drizzle, and a fire and brimstone preacher bubbles up through the mix. Yup, we’re in Godspeed! You Black Emperor territory, which makes sense since several of that over-the-top orchestra’s members contribute here. Godspeed wore that trick out after their second album, but somehow Bozulich makes it work one more time.

There isn't an album that I own that is like this, it will haunt your mind and plague your ears with harsh noise, spastic break beats and ambient chaotic rhythms that seemingly flow amazingly together to craft the sounds of the apocalypse. It is simply mind blowing and really shows off the genius of these two artists.

Get this album or you will be missing out on a true masterpiece, words can simply not express how amazing this is. Even if you hate noise, you simply can't miss this album.

Another Shit and Shine release here, since I really liked Cherry (thanks Alice!), so I thought I should post this. I can't say much else, other than get it if you liked Cherry, since it is more awesomeness from Shit And Shine. This is really good noise rock, get it if you are a fan of the band, or the genre.

Shit and Shine have been assaulting audiences with their unique take on barely controlled, forcefully percussive, and endlessly repetitive stoner-skronk for the better part of a few years, they’re far from a known entity even in their home country of England. With a lineup that often balloons to encompass as many as five drummers/percussionists at any one time, the records they’ve unloaded on the public thus far betray not only a constantly fluctuating lineup, but also the different approaches to brute force hostility a variable membership like theirs necessarily entails.

The seven songs here are a strong, smart combination of pummelling riffage and carefully-planned changes, something like a Ruins' 45 played at 33 – or a more complex updating of Godflesh. There's a surprising amount of variety, given that it can be tricky to individualize tracks when they're instrumental and this heavy; it's nearly all deep, aggressive rock churn, dominated by smashing drums, ultra-low grinding bass and guitar that shoots off shards of distortion in all directions. The ingredients don't vary much, it's the mixture of them that maintains interest. And, wisely, Noxagt display an awareness of the listener's attention span, keeping the album at an easily-digestible 38 minutes.
