A fucking great record from the label that brought you Snowing and shit. Catchy lyrics about some divorced family or something. Has one of the most depressing tracks I've ever heard in "Sleep Patterns." If you buy a copy of it from the label's site, they send you a starburst. Fuck yeah.

Mister Lonely has been exploding onto the California post-rock scene with the release of their newest EP, Patagonia. Abrasive, upfront, and vauguely reminiscent of such projects as No Ease and Swans, Mister Lonely hails from the lonely regions of music they constrain to their own. Entrancing, subliminal, and dangerous, this EP is not to be missed.

This album is a playful assortment of sounds that match the title of the record. Stronger tracks include "Because You're Lonely" and "The Ringleader". If you enjoy that modern emo sound, mixed with a bit of pop punk, listen to this fucking band.

It is known to fans of Mark Kozelek's music that he is as skilled an interpreter as he is a songwriter. After cutting the final Red House Painters album in 1998, he has since used his own name as a means to release the occasional odd cover album between larger projects. 2008's The Finally LP is among the finest and most humble of these yet, presenting an accessible array of bittersweet yet amicable acoustic covers that span the breadth of Kozelek's unique taste and influence. Known for drastically reconfiguring the songs of Bon Scott, Isaac Brock and Ace Frehley in the past, the singer does not limit himself here either: while stripping down Will Oldham's grimy "New Partner" to a beautifully finger-picked folk song, he does the exact opposite to the likes of Low's "Lazy", metamorphosing their classic slowcore dirge into an upbeat country ditty. Same goes for Husker Du's "Celebrated Summer", which appears as an open-tune mood piece in the vein of Nick Drake. Meanwhile, "If You Want Blood" is an alternate version of an AC/DC cover that appeared on Kozelek's 2001 collection What's Next to The Moon. This one is worth a spin for admirers of Mark Kozelek or good folk music in general, as well as anyone looking for some interesting cover versions.

Before I get into the album, let me introduce myself really

found me on /mu/ and I’ve been posting on /mu/ for about 2 or 3 years. I’m a
big fan of jazz, post-rock, and lots of /mu/core type of stuff. I’ll post lots
of jazz usually but I could come here with any sort of album.
Don’t be fooled by the album cover-the music sounds nothing
like it. This is probably the best jazz release of 2012, and my personal
favorite. From Hearts Content, the first track, MOPDtK goes into a rock beat
with brilliant saxophone riffs and trumpet falsettos. President Polk is another
standout, where the instruments go into altissimo ranges while the drummer
shifts from style to style. Speaking of the drummer, that’s probably the most
interesting thing about this album. It’s worth it alone to listen to this album
based on the staggering amount of styles the drummer effortlessly moves through,
from funk to jazz to rock. I also feel that this album is a great introduction
into more eclectic jazz as it’s somewhat accessible.

The new album by THIS band (If I speak their name the censorbots will come and find the album; same reason for the custom album art) is actually both refreshing and surprising. I think it was a common notion that this album was both highly anticipated in addition to highly guarded against. The fears surrounding this LP were justified; coming off of a movie soundtrack that was uninteresting, and the follow-up to an album that fell flat, this LP was in a position to shine. And it does. Well, sort of. Whether you like this album or not comes down to whether you have a notion of the aesthetic the album goes for. Essentially, it's the soundtrack for an 80s movie, but every one of them. Action, romance, drama, comedy; all of this stuff has a place. That said, if you do not enjoy that aesthetic this album will not be as good for you. Just as a fact. A line in the third song on the album struck me, the speaker says they want a sound of each decade up to the 70/80s and then a sound of the future. That's what this album is, in a nutshell. It's a throwback to the heydays of old, with sounds of the future as well. If that's your bag, this is your album of the year; if not, it's worth a listen.
