Diana Damrau - Arie di Bravura (2007)

While the real album art for this release is pretty terrible, the opposite could be said for Diana Damrau. One of my favorite Opera singers of all time, Damrau really shines when faced with even the most difficult of vocal solos. The so-called German 'voice-wreckers' give her no pause, and she sings through them with ease and always approaches these complex arias with interesting artistic interpretation. Truly she is a world-class Opera singer, and worth hearing even if Opera is not your main interest.

Slowride's C/S is similar to True Widow, in that they both employ a copious amount of downtempo tunes to good effect. However, in addition to being slowcore, Slowride also employs elements from emo and indie music. (Old school emo, not whiny kids who like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas') It's loud but not forward, a dull and melancholy rock album that bleeds instead of pounds. This is a must-have for any slowcore fan, and a damn fine album in general.

Yukihiro Takahashi is someone you all know of but don't know. He is the percussion and voice behind Yellow Magic Orchestra and has done tons of solo work throughout his long and very bountiful career. This album is dated, I hate to admit, but is a fun listen. Lots of very early synth-pop type rock, which should fit in well with any fan of earlier YMO, Kraftwerk type music. I've been enjoying this a lot the past few weeks, hopefully one of you will as well :)

This is what I wish electronic music started evolving towards instead of dubstep/brostep. Lush electronic tones, carefully crafted into interesting rhythms that tell a story. Airy and distant vocals set over a gritty cityscape of post-futuristic grime. It's imaginative, playful, creative, and just plain fun to listen to. However, let me warn you, this isn't for listening to with friends, it's too languid and unforward, it doesn't press it's point into you, but rather opens a door and invites you inside. This is a piece you have to explore, not just experience. Frankly, that's a good thing. If there is one thing electronic music desperately needs; it's a little bit of subtlety. Grab it, listen well, and if you like it, buy it. I can't speak for every electronic lover, but I know that I want more. The album starts off with Kiwi Dream, a really damn good intro to a great album, and hits it's stride at track two, Vulvatron, which is fucking amazing. I suppose I could be a little bit more verbose about it, but I really think that sums it up. Three, Oh Lord, builds off the momentum from track two, introducing some of their elements but presenting them in a new light. I'm not sure what to make of track four, it's sub-rhythmic, uncaring, and decidedly downtempo. After these four tracks, the album consists of a pantheon of remixes, some good, some bad, you know how that is. Either way, this is definitely a release to snag.

There is a staid, poignant, lively, and undead quality to this album that is unlike any that I have heard before it. One of the most interesting conceptual albums I have heard in a long time, and not something you will probably hear of outside this blog. An underground album that sounds well... underground? Gem from the Planet Mu back catalog. Though only 3 years old, the album is quite interesting and as it should. Barry Lynn is quite the talented fella, though most famous for his dubstep works as Boxcutter his self named IDM album is gold. Lots of nice, rich atmospheres, nicely worked drum patterns, lots of nice glitchy sounds and very enjoyable melodies. It's a shock that I overlooked it for so long since there is a lot to like here.

Himuro's latest album. Lots of good tracks for idm junkies and electronic fans alike. Really nice, flowing, modern IDM album with a lot of nice styles and influences all neatly packaged into one album. Very consistent, lots of nice sounds to enjoy and kinda get lost in. Keeps the tempo high most of the time, but the tracks are very easy to enjoy.

I also want to note how nice tracks like I Wanna Show You What I'm Seeing and Sort Of DnB are, Himuro has a nice way of adding in some very "beautiful" sounds into his music. Very pleasing to the ears kinda stuff. Especially Sort Of DnB, absolutely adore it, very beautiful song. Well worth the download for that track alone.

This here is quite the famous album. Though not my favorite P5 release, it was a very important one in their career as for the pop music scene in japan. For those who don't know Pizzicato Five have been around since the late 80's I believe and have been a strong player in the "Shibuya-kei" movement that swept through japan and the world in the 90's (which all the kids like to talk about). Their music is very influential and actually very nice and diverse. I often think they have a sound of their own and actually fell in love with it when I first heard the (famous) Happy End Of The World album.

Though this is a very old release I randomly put it on this morning and forgot how much I liked this group. Personally I find it to be a nice change of pace from my current interests which I am growing tired with, very nice loungey downtempo pop music with a healthy jazz and hip hop influence (apparently De La Soul was a big influence on the group, most notably in the groups adaptation of sampling). Very "classy" music, if you would like one word to describe it.

It being in japanese may be a set back, the music is top notch. Personally, I find the first few tracks to be a bit oddly placed, but the album has some of their best work on it. Somewhat of an infant version of their sound which developed a lot more over time I can only say it's fantastic and you should give it a listen (then again I always say that!).

FYI the track Baby Love Child was actually featured in that episode of Futurama about Leela's parents. Albeit a different english version but even so. Great release, give it a listen, yada yada, you know the drill.

Change of pace I guess, here is one part of the Artificial Intelligence series which I think stands out on it's own as Richard D James' best work and arguably my favorite from the series. Very classic IDM vibes with a lot of neat bleeps and bloops more akin to James' old work in acid house. Very nice album even if it is from 1993 (most often I find more older electronic music to sound dated but this sounds rather fresh and overall pleasant to listen to). To be honest I find his older work to be much nicer than his new work (aside from Windowlicker ofc). But this album really stands out no matter who made it because it's a very interesting album to listen to.

I would say this is worth the download for Faith alone but the Limewax and Panacea tracks are phenomenal. Hell the whole compilation is. Six hard hitting tracks from some of the best in the business. Just dark tracks often referred to as "relentless" which I find to be absolutely stunning, like I said Faith is one hell of a track. I haven't been able to get it out of my head all week.

Really "top tier" quality stuff, download and enjoy. Oh and brace yourselves, this is heavy stuff. :)

Yellow Ostrich - The Mistress (2010)

Imagine if Neutral Milk Hotel had a younger brother who was really into pop. This is that younger brother. Lo-fi, yet unabashedly pleased to be there; this album shines in being not only fun, but being thoughtfully so. The Mistress opens with a really cool harmony over sparse, yet fitting, guitar, loping in and out of tonality as it seemingly wakes up, still ready to go back to sleep. But it doesn't. WHALE, the standout track on this album, starts with some drum pounding and harmonics, the singing of lyrics playing second fiddle. In the background: a whale? muffled screaming? But suddenly we're on the ocean. Some really rad percussion ensues, and the album keeps building until the throbbing riffs in track four begin, and carry through most of the album. Strangest use of vocals? Track five. It's just weird to hear, but pleasant at the same time; imagine being haunted by an acapella quartet of ghosts. The album ends on a shoegaze-y note, dreamy vocals to coast on out. All in all, a good album worth hearing.

Can you count from one to brutal? Hopefully so, because one is about the amount of seconds this album takes to get there. Tight drumming, heavy and crunching guitar with some equally impressive riffs, aggressive baselines, and the kind of singing that keeps cough drop companies in business. But what sets this album apart from the typical metal garbage is that this band understands how to write good songs; sure, they know how to let a good riff sink in, but they also know how to stop that riff from becoming a song. Which is what separates the bacon from the gristle or one of those stupid euphemisms. (Side note: those 'good from the bad' euphemisms are lame.) Point being: this band knows exactly how and what it's playing, and does it in the best ways possible. Not to mention that cover art is pretty rad.

This album was odd, Darkstar are a dubstep/dance duo who have released some really popular singles on Hyperdub and with their first album comes a very cold, forlorn, dark synth-pop esque album that was really a breath of fresh air in the cold winter days. Absolutely loved it. With the album the duo added a vocalist for most tracks that really accents the music.

At first I didn't like it, I'll admit, I expected a bunch more club oriented tracks they are known for. But a month or so later I accidentally gave it a listen and fell in love with it's melancholic sound, dark/beautiful synths and overall pleasing tracks. Really just a great album. Aidy's Girl really fits right in and adds a lot to the album I think, not that it is a good example of what this album is like, but it really does help set the mood.

Call this my x-mas gift to all you, sorry for the lack of updates but I've been busy (idk whats up with the other folks but I think they are busy too). So enjoy this, very good album that shouldn't be over looked. And if you like it look out for the upcoming James Blake album coming out in February.

This album has a very sad story to it, often regarded as a failure by the label and even the producers of it, it was cast into the shadows of obscurity left to remain as a long and forgotten cult album. No one really remembers it, no one talks about it, no one really knows of it. Though us with the internet are able to obtain it quite easily it isn't exactly something people go looking for, again due to it being lost in obscurity and in the cabinets of time.

The album itself is a somewhat forced collaboration between italian producers Romano Musumarra and Claudio Gizzi back in the mid to late 70's. Using the MCS70 analog synth they made 4 tracks (cd version 1 was split into 3 parts, thus 6 tracks) in little under 4 weeks of studio time. As I said, the finished result was not well liked by both producers thus they never worked together again.

While listening I was quite taken by how fantastic the album really is, it's a strikingly haunting futuristic soundtrack which could only have been created in the time it was produced. I've listened to it countless times and personally regard it as one of the finest things I've heard from the era of early electronic music and italo disco. For those curious it can be compared to other early italian electronic music and soundtracks from early italian horror and sci-fi films.

Each track is just fantastic, I often find myself at a loss to describe it. Though it is very futuristic, it has dramatic overtones and very interesting sounds behind it. The album itself just feels cinematic and epic, though I guess some could see it as dated due to it being mostly all analog synthesis, it really hasn't aged much. I think the "retro aspect" to it gives it some of the albums finest qualities. You simply don't get albums like this anymore.

Sure, it is broken up into 5 tracks, but it may as well not have been. The Dark is more adventure than album, a conceptual masterpiece which will blow your fucking mind. Beginning with softly swirling heavenly sounds, the bass comes in, pounding upon the album as a blacksmith tempers his work, and then enters the chaotic rhythms similar to those found on an Aphex Twin album, before dissonant and well-placed noises threaten to consume you. It's telling a story... a story of collapse; of degredation and rebith. It changes subtly, moving slowly from theme to theme as it winds along it's long forgotten road, rushing past vast whirlwinds of sound, space, and time into an ambient electronic wasteland.

Fredrika Stahl - Sweep Me Away (2010)

Fredrika Stahl grew up in France with aspirations of becoming a dancer, but soon turned towards being a singer/songwriter. Originally beginning with a jazz-style, she has since moved towards a sound which more strongly emulated pop, reminiscent of the arrangements found on classic Beach Boys albums. But don't expect a glitzy bleach-blonde happy-go-lucky pop album, it opens with the chantings of a ghostly choir, and sprawls out into a piano piece, and if you strain to hear it, the soft shaking of a maraca. It opens up to the drum and basslines, and Stahl's voice shines through the whole way as the strings come in, accentuating her poignant lyrics.

It's pretty rad.

If you're now curious as to how this sounds, simply examine the album cover. It feels like taking a walk through a park in winter, where the air is dead, and the longer you walk the less sure you are that the park is completely real. The whole experience becomes a surreal episode, something for your memory to analyze, twist, and distort, attempting to rationalize it. It begins to snow, and you're walking through this park, into the white.

Back in the swing of liking The Residents so I thought I should upload these. Though they aren't a great intro to the band, Diskomo 2k and Eskimo are kind of like companion albums so if I upload one I feel like I should upload the other.

Diskomo 2000 is a Residents album with their take on Disco, with most lyrics consisting of old children songs. I can't help but really find this to be strange yet overly catchy. The way they produce music is very strange actually but I think it's the mix of a genre they never play and the odd source of lyrics that make this kinda memorable as far as being an EP goes.

I recently got in touch with the band Werewolves, possibly the best damn music from Athens, GA at the moment. Similar to Animal Collective in sound, and yet with their own beautiful originality, Werewolves are an up and coming band that deserves success in any sense of the word. They're working a new EP right now, and have already released a full LP: Someday We'll Live In the Forest.

Hres: What kind of process do you go through when writing a new song?

Wyatt: I honestly don't know if I could describe the process. I usually forget how and why I wrote most songs although a lot of them are inspired by random thoughts that pop into my head, like seeing a bunch of birds chillin' on this dormitory across from the bookstore I work at gave me the idea for Acrophobic Birds. As for the rest of the band, I usually just ask them to do something with it and don't pay too much attention to what they add. I'm not big on micromanaging the what everyone does although some people prefer me to write parts for them, and in that case I usually just make up something on the spot. I think a lot of the characteristics our sound come from the really lax attitude we take toward what we're playing.

Hres: What are rehearsals like? Is there a list of things that get played when you practice, or does everyone just get together and hang out?

Wyatt: A lot of the time we operate under the assumption that it will all come back to us when we're at the show, so rehearsals are few and far between. There's like 8 of us now and we all have jobs and are all in like 3 bands and so it's hard to schedule real rehearsals. And of course when we do get together rehearsals usually consist of equal parts of playing music and talking about the internet. My strategy is to have super low expectations and as long as we sound reasonably adequate I'm satisfied and then we go do fun things like play N64 or get Mexican food.

Hres: What's the best show you've played so far, how was it like, where was it?

Wyatt: Probably a tie for me. One of them was in Geneseo, New York at a house that was called the Fart Farm and there were all these weird kids there that were really into our music. Most of them are my friends now. The other one was at a movie theatre in downtown Athens during this Athfest festival thing. It's weird because all these bands in Athens play at the same time and then all these people that you've never seen before come downtown just because it's a festival and a big deal. My friend Sam (from Athens band Titans of Filth) was doing the door and told me that there were distinctly non-Werewolvesy looking people asking specifically to see Werewolves so that was a cool thing because I got to play music for all the people that called me gay in high school and apparently they liked it. So now I feel pretty vindicated. Also like half the band was wasted and yet we messed up way less than we usually do.

Hres: What are your future goals for the band?

Wyatt: From my perspective, I'm hoping that I can eventually make enough money off of this band to get all my cavities filled. I had to stop drinking soda because I'm afraid of all my teeth falling out. Other than that we're already doing the shit we want to do so I'm not too concerned about the future. Hopefully we can get someone to make our CDs for us in the future though because putting them together is a huge pain in the ass. Oh yeah I hope we can one day get a van or something so we don't have to bring two cars on tour.

Hres: What are some of your new songs like compared to the old ones?

Wyatt: Probably pretty much the same except that I'm a lot less embarrassed about my lyrics now. SWLITF has songs on it that I wrote when I was 18 and the lyrics are really stupid in my opinion. That and I guess I'm continually being influenced by the stuff I get interested in so that probably has something to do with it. Like I say, most of the stuff on our first album was written a few years ago, like back in 07 and 08 and I was still transitioning from kid in high school to the college drop out I am today, so I probably have a better feel for writing the kind of songs I want to write now.

Hres: What is the band munching on during rehearsals?

Wyatt: I used to live across the street from a restaurant called Barberitos which is a Mexican food chain based out of Athens and so we typically ate a lot of that. Not to mention beer and 'cigarettes'.

Hres: Have any songs of yours been written by band members who weren't sober at the time?

Wyatt: Well I write all the songs and typically when I'm not sober I want to do something more interesting than writing music. Not to say that some of us aren't drug enthusiasts, but some of us don't even drink so I don't think our sound has that much to do with being under the influence. I think a lot of people expect that because we like distortion, and weird noises, and lo-fi recordings and noise pieces that our direction with the music is really influenced by drugs, but it's not really a direct cause and effect, just coincidental. I've always been into weird sounds, sober or not.

Hres: What are some of your influences, or what are you listening to at the moment?

Wyatt: Well let's see, there's 8 of us and we all like different things so it's hard to say. I think in general some common threads are that we all like indie pop, obviously but aside from that some of us are really into folk and traditional music, as well as Motown and Specter pop and other shit from the 60s. I really like the Zombies and the Hollies and I've been getting really into early protest music from the 50s and 60s. I feel like in general we all tend to gravitate to stuff that feels humanistic and unpretentious so whether it be Malvina Reynolds or Heavenly or some Elephant 6 crap or hardcore punk if it feels like it comes from a place we can identify with we usually get into it. Particularly if the place is being incredibly poor, or anti-racist/sexist, and has a strong anti-consumer or anti-corporate sentiment. We're very big on DIY ethics and the idea that art and music is something everybody should be doing, so that's probably the easiest way to hone in on what we're influenced by.

Hres: If you could have any member of any band in your band at the moment, who would it be?

Wyatt: Everybody in Werewolves now or in the past has been a really good friend of mine so... I don't really know or care. I have enough psychological hangups trying to keep together a band with 7 of my friends, I don't need to introduce any strangers into the mix.

In the last few months I've taken a much bigger interest in this guy here. He goes by the name, "The Gasman" and has released around 8 or so albums on some great labels like Sublight and Planet Mu. For some reason his work has always gone under my radar until a few weeks ago when I ordered his OO1 album. Though this isn't that album I also downloaded this on a whim and well, fell in love with it. Very very good IDM~esque stuff, nothing but good things can be said from my perspective.

I really liked it, yeah, it was a great listen, hands down one of my favorite discoveries in the past year or so. Though many people will probably not find it to be mindblowing as it really isn't like OMG INNOVATIVE but it's more of that "everything I loved about this genre all in one album with no filler at all" kinda thing. If anyone ever asks me for recommendations in this genre this is the first album I am telling them to get. Really though, how is this not more popular?

This right here is a neat album by Bogdan Raczynski, it's actually a bunch of old school hardcore and drum and bass stuff. Well actually it's a bunch of really good Bogdan Raczynski tracks meant to look like a bunch of old school hardcore and drum and bass stuff. I really like it, if you like any stuff from the Rephlex label, or from Mr. Raczynski you should like this. Sucks it was only released on vinyl and limited to 300 copies, makes it hard to find a good rip of it. But 192 should be good for everyone.

Ya know a lot of people said "blah blah no drum and bass" well that is no fun. Plus I really don't care about reader opinions to be honest. I am here to post music I like and to diversify things. So that I shall do with this terrific mix by the one and only Panacea.

The Therapy Session mixes are really all fantastic but this one is just, ugh, GOOD. I rarely get this excited listening to something over and over but every time I start this I just can't help it. It's just phenomenal, every artist on this mix is. Not to mention how well the tracks were selected and mixed together.

It's just a wonderful mix, I adore this. The fact he is able to mix all this shit together is boggling because it all feels so natural yet some of the stuff he mixes in here just doesn't sound like it would work. But really, it's a rush to listen to.

Usually, I would say just get it but I know a bunch of you are going to shrug this off as what ever you people shrug things off as. Enjoy missing out on it then, I was also soooo enthusiastic about this I decided to upload a flac rip someone was so kind enough to leave laying around the internet.
